What Is The Difference Between A Semi-Furnished And Furnished Apartment?

23If you have ever looked for furnished apartments in San Diego before, you’ve probably seen the terms “unfurnished,” “semi-furnished” and “fully furnished” thrown around a lot. While what “unfurnished” entails is relatively straightforward, the difference between semi-furnished and furnished can be confusing—this fact is made even worse by the fact that every landlord seems to have a different opinion about these terms as well. Nevertheless, there are several guidelines that most apartments abide by that you can use to better understand what to expect out of your apartment rental.

Furnishing is roughly comprised of two different categories: furniture and appliances. Furniture includes things like sofas, beds, desks, coffee and dining tables, dressers, and so on. Appliances on the other hand include things like stoves, dish washers, ovens, washing machines, dryers, and more.

Fully Furnished Apartments

Fully furnished apartments will tend to have nearly all items for both furniture and appliances. Although it will depend on each case, in general someone renting a fully furnished apartment can expect:

  • Sofas
  • Beds
  • Desks
  • Chairs
  • Coffee Tables
  • Dining Tables
  • Artwork
  • Shelves
  • Dressers
  • Bedding
  • Kitchenware
  • Towels
  • TV
  • Air Conditioning
  • Stoves
  • Ovens
  • Washing Machines
  • Dish Washers

Semi-Furnished/Partially Furnished Apartments

Semi-furnished apartments on the other hand, contain fewer amenities than fully furnished. Semi-furnished apartments can typically fall into 3 different types:

  • Furniture provided, with no appliances
  • No furniture provided, with appliances provided
  • A mix of both furniture and appliances provided

Most semi-furnished apartments will offer a mix of both provided furniture and appliances, but ultimately you will have to ask for the specific details of a semi-furnished for the most accurate description.
